According to Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Ndiphiwe Mkhlakuvana, the G4S security vehicle was attacked on the M17 at Motherwell around 16:20. The gunmen, traveling in two bakkies, fired shots at the vehicle, forcing it to stop. Explosives were then used to blow open the armoured vehicle.
The gang made off with an undisclosed amount of money, fleeing in different directions. However, a multi-disciplinary team was hot on their heels, and a confrontation ensued when the suspects opened fire on the police as they fled towards Kwazakhele.
In a desperate bid to escape, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and hijacked a motorist. However, they jumped out of the car just a few meters away and fled on foot.
The Hawks eventually apprehended six suspects, with four of them sustaining injuries. A haul of rifles, pistols, cell phones, balaclavas, and hand gloves were recovered from the suspects.

The brazen robbery has left the community of Motherwell in shock, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The 66-year-old Omotoso and his co-accused Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho stand trial on over 90 charges in the Gqeberha High Court.
The leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church (JDI) has been behind bars for seven years while his co-accused are out on bail.
Omotoso told the court that he holds a Certificate in Theology and is of Nigerian descent.
The married father of three adult children told the court that he came to South Africa for clergy purposes and by “The Grace of God” considers himself a Christian.
“The Lord God told me to come to South Africa.
“He said Go, and I will tell you what to do.”
Omotoso founded the JDI in 2000. The church also has a footprint in England, France, and Israel.
According to Omotoso, the JDI derives its income from offerings, tithes, a television network, and the selling of materials like books.
The court heard that Omotoso’s congregants referred to him as the “Man of God” or “Daddy”.
He said he did not know why they called him “Daddy” but added that it could be due to his age or it had a spiritual connotation.
Many of the complaints testified that some of the alleged sexual misconduct took place at one of Omotoso’s mission houses in Durban, an allegation that Omotoso denies.
He said about 15-20 girls would stay at the mission house at a time for Biblical-related purposes which included music training and rehearsals.
He confirmed that one of the complainants was a minor, but insisted that the 15-year-old girl had been at the mission house with the permission of her parents.
He told his attorney, Peter Daubermann, that the complainants who resided at the mission house did so out of their own free will.
Omotoso believes that many of the alleged inappropriate comments made to the girls were “misconstrued”.
He further denied:
telling the girls they will make men crazy in bed
commenting about his private parts
referring to them as his girlfriends
use the word “fire-fire” in reference to the girls in a sexual way
allowing the girls to touch his private parts
raping or sexually assaulting anyone
trafficking or transporting the complainants for sexual purposes
Cross-examination will begin on Tuesday morning.
Omtoso has been in custody for more than seven years while Sitho and Sulani are out on bail.

EXTORTIONISTS TARGET EASTERN CAPE INITIATION SEASON
Tsotsi’s Demand Protection Fees from Desperate Families
The Eastern Cape initiation season has been marred by a wave of extortion, as gangs demand protection fees from families with young men undergoing the traditional rite of passage.
According to reports, the gangs are targeting initiation schools in various parts of the province, including the rural areas of the former Transkei and Ciskei homelands.
The extortionists, who are allegedly linked to local amapara, are demanding hefty protection fees from the families of the initiates. The fees, which can range from R500 to R5,000, are allegedly meant to “protect” the initiates from harm during the initiation process.
However, sources close to the initiation schools have revealed that the extortionists are using intimidation and violence to extract the protection fees from the families.
“It’s a nightmare,” said one source, who wished to remain anonymous. “The gangs are threatening to harm the initiates if the families don’t pay up. It’s extortion, plain and simple.”
The Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has condemned the extortion and vowed to work with law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders has called on the communities to report any suspicious activities during the initiation season.

As the authorities struggle to contain the situation, families are being forced to live in fear. The question on everyone’s mind is: what’s being done to protect our boys?
“We urge the authorities to take immediate action against these thugs,” said a community leader. “Our children’s safety and well-being are at stake. We cannot allow this exploitation to continue.”
As the initiation season continues, one thing is clear: something needs to be done to stop these heartless extortionists and ensure the safety and dignity of our young initiates.
