KAK DAM IN MY YARD.

By Phumlani Saul

A family from KwaNobuhle is desperately seeking assistance from the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality after an underground sewerage pipe burst and subsequently left them with a sewage dam in their backyard.

Frustrated resident Mandisa Madlakane, 52, who has lived in the house for years, said the pipe started leaking in October 2019 and since then the family had battled with a constant stench and potential health hazard on their property.

She said municipal workers had dug up their backyard shortly after her initial complaint, fixed the pipes, but never closed the hole.

Shortly thereafter and pipes started leaking again.

“The pipe burst in October 2019 and we called the municipality to fix it,” Madlakane said.

“A day after they did that the pipe started to leak again. Since then they have promised to fix the pipe but have never done so.

She said every day they had to contend with the stench from the sewage which has dammed up in front of the kitchen.

“The flow is right in front of our kitchen door. It’s difficult to cook and the stench has spread throughout the house.

“Uitenhage is very hot so we have to open the windows and bear the terrible smell,” she said.

The family also has a year-old baby. They fear the child might crawl outside and fall into the sewage.

“My grandchild is a year old, and we have to watch her and keep the door closed because we fear that the child might fall into the hole.

“We are desperate and with the heavy rains it gets worse.”

“Our washing line was at the back and we had to take it down because of the hole,” she said.

The family have four dogs.

“We are forced to keep our dogs in a tiny space because of the hole. This has really worsened and the municipality is totally ignoring our cry.”

Madlakane said she constantly reported the matter to any municipal worker around their neighbourhood, after several failed attempts using the toll-free municipal number.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said it was difficult to trace the matter as the family had lost their reference number.

However, Mniki assured Daily kasi news that they would follow up on the problem.

WE LOST THE GAME IN THE FIRST 15 MINUTES

By Phumlani Saul

Chippa United coach Norman Mapeza bemoaned his side’s poor start against Orlando Pirates and believes the game was lost in ‘the first 15 minutes’.

Bucs’ victory at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium also saw Gabadinho Mhango bag his 13th and 14th goals in just 18 matches this season, stretching his lead in the top goal scorer race to four.

Chidi Kwem gave Chippa hope by pulling a goal back on the half-hour mark after Gabadinho Mhango had given Pirates a two-goal lead with a brace, but the second stanza could not produce goals as the Buccaneers held on for victory.

“Ja I think we lost the game in the first half, we didn’t defend well, we gave away a soft penalty. Second-half we looked much better in terms of organisation at the back and going forward,” said Mapeza.

“I think we’re just unlucky not to walk away with a point tonight. We saw it in the first-half [Pirates’ mobility going forward] but in the second-half the legs were gone, then we started to push.

“But like I said we lost the game in the first 15 minutes, you know it’s difficult, because we just had to manage the game but well done to the boys. There are so many positives.

“I think second-half we kept pushing, looking for that equaliser which didn’t come. We’ve got somewhere to work, somewhere to start coming to our next league match.”

The Zimbabwean mentor also explained why he brought on Ruzaigh Gamildien in the second stanza in place of William Twala.

“We wanted to add more numbers going forward because if you look at our performance in the first half, there was only [Chidi] Kwem, he was lonely there, we needed to add numbers going forward that’s why we brought in Gamildien.

“I think it brought something but like I said well done to the boys, they worked so hard tonight. There are so many positives, we just need to working hard,” he added.

DEAD COWS WORRY STOKWE

By Mzwandile Bhefile

RESIDENTS woke up on Monday to find dogs feasting on slaughtered cows’ remains.
Three cows were stolen and slaughtered in the open veld in Holomisa, near Uitenhage.

Ndodomzi Stokwe (67), the owner of the cows, said he left his 24 cows to graze in the veld on Sunday and planned to pick them up the next morning

“We got there and realised they were my cows.”

A resident told the DkTeam it was tense in the area after the discovery.

He said there was a problem with cattle theft three years ago, but it had stopped.

“Cows roam on their own. In the morning they leave their homes and go to the veld and return in the night,” he said.

He said thugs took advantage of people’s trust.

“We suspect those responsible are people from the area feared by everyone. They slaughter the cows, put them into their van and drive away.”

He said even goats were not safe.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele said residents found the remains of three slaughtered cows in a forest.

“It’s believed the cattle were stolen. A case of stock theft was opened and the Uitenhage stock theft unit is investigating,” she said.

SAVED BY HUNGRY TUMMY!

By Phumlani Saul and Mzwandile Bhefile

SOME people claim to be rescued from certain death by divine intervention . . . or even superhuman strength.

But Phunyezwa Mate (38) from Khayelitsha, Uitenhage believes making lunch for her family was what saved her from the jaws of death.

She had barely left the lounge of her RDP when a taxi crashed into the house on Tuesday afternoon, causing the wall to collapse on the spot where she had been sitting just minutes before!

A taxi driver allegedly lost control when he avoided a collision with a donkey and crashed into her house.

Neighbours ran to her rescue thinking that she was trapped in the house – but luckily, at the time Phunyezwa was busy cooking in the kitchen.

Phunyezwa told Daily kasi news: “About 20 minutes earlier I had left my bedroom to sit in the lounge, but I got restless and decided to start preparing lunch.

“A few minutes later I heard a loud bang and the house was covered in dust. Then I saw people running towards my house, screaming. I was confused and didn’t know what was going on. But when I looked towards my bedroom I saw a Toyota Venture parked inside.

“The wall that separated it from the lounge had collapsed! I thank God for saving my life. If I had not gone to the kitchen to prepar lunch maybe I would be dead by now. Luckily my kitchen was extended with zinc and I was not hurt.”

House owner Thandeka Fate (51) said: “The taxi driver tried to avoid a donkey in Lorence Vinqi Street, lost control and crashed into the house. When we saw how badly the house was damaged we thought Phunyezwa was dead. But she emerged from the dust without injuries.”

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Gerda Swart said a case of malicious damage to property was made but no arrest has yet been made.

CELTIC HELD BY CHIPPA IN PE YESTERDAY

By Phumlani Saul

Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the Absa Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

William Twala returned from suspension and immediately went into the visitors starting line-up, as Ryan De Jongh made his first start of the season for Celtic with Victor Letsoalo dropped.

Played in the Port Elizabeth city, Celtic looked to return to winning ways after an entertaining 3-2 loss away to Bidvest Wits in midweek as Chippa seeked to continue their fine run of form.

Following a tight opening, the first shot in anger came from the home side as Silas Maziya put Jackson Mabokgwane to the test though the latter responded with a fine tip on 22 minutes.

Chippa continued probing, but Mabokgwane once again thwarted the danger from Sandile Mthethwa amongst others.

Siwelele hit the front two minutes from halftime courtesy of star player Ndumiso Mabena who finished off a decent chance near the danger area.

The lead though lasted only four minutes as the Chilli Boys drew level from the penalty spot with Twala getting the better of Mabokgwane following a coming-together in the area.

Both sides looked for the winner as the half went by, but chances from either side flew astray with neither goalkeeper put to the test.

Celtic made an attacking double change following the final quarter in Letsoalo and Neo Maema who came on for Siphelele Luthuli and Andile Fikizolo respectively.

The change didn’t inspire any confidence as the two sides settled for a point apiece that leave both in seventh and tenth spot respectively

Power outage disrupts broadcast services on Umhlobo Wenene

By Phumlani Saul

Umhlobo Wenene FM had to broadcast in a mobile unit this morning following a substation explosion that happened last night in Newtown Park, Port Elizabeth.

The explosion, which has caused a major power outage, has left large parts of the city without electricity. According to SABC’s acting spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo, the power outage resulted in Umhlobo Wenene FM being off-air for hours, and had to rely on standby generator that failed to kick in on time.

Seapolelo said: “The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) would like to apologise for the disruption of broadcast services on Umhlobo Wenene from early this morning.”

“The disruption of broadcast services was due to an explosion at a power substation within the proximity of the SABC premises in Port Elizabeth. The station is currently broadcasting form the Outside Broadcast vehicle and the technical team is working on fully restoring the broadcast services.”

SABC has further reported that Nelson Mandela Bay electricians were working on the line fault while technicians have been brought in to attend to the generator.
