In a significant blow to the local economy, Goodyear has announced that it will be closing its manufacturing plant in Kariega,
Nelson Mandela Bay, resulting in the loss of approximately 900 jobs. The decision, which comes after 78 years of operation, is part of the company’s restructuring efforts to optimize its footprint and portfolio in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region.
The factory, which was established in 1947, has been a cornerstone of the local economy, providing employment opportunities for hundreds of workers.
The closure of the plant is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, with thousands of jobs in secondary industries, such as catering, security, and corporate social investment projects, potentially being impacted.
According to a statement released by Goodyear, the company is committed to acting fairly and providing support to its employees and their families. The process will be facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA), and the company has expressed gratitude for the dedication and efforts of its South African team.
The National Metal Workers Union (NUMSA) has yet to receive a Section 189 notice from Goodyear, according to representative Phakamile Hlubi-Majola. The union is likely to play a key role in negotiations with the company to secure the best possible outcome for affected employees.
